Chobani mogul ex-wife stakes claim to $1B share on handwritten scribbles

The ex-wife of the Chobani Greek-yogurt mogul is trying to stake her $1 billion claim to the business on handwritten scribbles, according to new court papers.

The mogul, billionaire Hamdi Ulukaya, says the notations on the torn-out page of an August 1997 calendar are nothing more than humdrum household budgeting.

"I am fairly confident that the [notes] all relate to family expenses," Ulukaya says in an affidavit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court late Thursday.

Ulukaya's former spouse, Dr. Ayse Giray, counters that the notes are "confirmation that monies were provided" as an investment in Chobani.

She sued her ex in 2012 for a 53 percent share in the $2 billion-plus company. The couple was married for less than two years in the late 1990s and the business was not an issue in their divorce.

Giray says in court papers that one note reading "6 – rent" refers to money she gave Ulukaya to rent a home upstate while a factory was under construction.

Another — "7 – cheque" — is a check she wrote to fund a business escrow account, although Ulukaya's lawyers say the attached check is actually from her brother and ended up bouncing.

Ulukaya's attorney, Orin Snyder, said Giray "waited 15 years to bring this lawsuit because she only invented her claims after Chobani became one of the top-selling yogurt brands in the United States."
