De Blasio and Stringer battle over school milk contracts

A food fight over school milk is causing the relationship between Mayor de Blasio's and City Comptroller Scott Stringer to grow more sour.

The mayor's office will grant a new contract to milk vendors — even though the comptroller's office had rejected the pending five-year, $123 million deals due to an investigation of the companies' practices.

De Blasio will use his executive power to muscle aside Stringer's probe out of fear that delaying the contracts will put the delivery of milk to schoolchildren at risk, sources said.

"It's irresponsible of the comptroller to interfere with . .. the delivery of milk to the city's public school children," said a source.

This is just the latest friction between de Blasio and Stringer. Last week the comptroller complained about a de Blasio plan to use executive orders to expand the city's living-wage law, saying the new plan steps on his oversight role.

Days later, Stringer hit de Blasio's administration with a "D" grade for its record of awarding contracts to minorities.

On Sunday, Stringer's office said that "DOE has come back to us with a milk contract riddled with integrity issues… This is simply unacceptable."
