Starz boss Chris Albrecht kicked off an aggressive pitch to investors, reminding them they can already buy a standalone premium cable network run by the guy who used to run HBO.
Albrecht, a former top executive at Time Warner who resigned after allegedly punching his then-girlfriend at a Las Vegas boxing match, addressed an investor get-together, saying that, "You can pay for the market leader, or you can get in early on a good thing."
Some investors have been clamoring for HBO owner Time Warner to unlock a Netflix-like valuation for its premium cable network of channels and move to distribute it direct to consumers.
Albrecht hinted that distributors are of a mind to distribute premium channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz and Epix along with their broadband bundles. He emphasized Starz will work closely with its distribution partners as an à la carte broadband-centered world comes into view.
