Maxim picks up new editor-in-chief from T magazine

Sardar Biglari, the secretive Iranian-born mogul who bought Maxim earlier this year, has poached Kate Lanphear, style editor of T, The New York Times Style Magazine, to be editor in chief of the lad mag.

Biglari had to fork over big bucks to get her to jump. Sources tell Media Ink that she is getting a package believed to be around $700,000 a year.

Biglari also paid big bucks to get publisher Kevin Martinez to jump from Condé Nast in July, where he was the publisher of Details. Sources say he is hauling in $1 million per year and the 62-year-old executive was given a three-year contract.

Lanphear, whose appointment was first reported by Women's Wear Daily, is the second woman to head the title in its history. Clare McHugh, who was the launch editor for British publishing maverick Felix Dennis in 1997, was the first.

Lanphear replaces Dan Bova, who jumped to Scout Media shortly after Biglari Holdings completed the buyout. She will be faced with the task of rebuilding staff after a high degree of turnover since Biglari completed the buyout of the embattled 18-year-old magazine for about $12 million in a distressed asset buy from Cerberus and others after talks to sell to another suitor collapsed in late 2013.
