Before ISIS, 9/11 and Lockerbie, the slaying of Jewish-American businessman Leon Klinghoffer stood as the most shocking act of terror carried out against an innocent US citizen.
Klinghoffer, a 69-year-old New Yorker confined to a wheelchair, was shot to death by Palestinian terrorists and thrown overboard from the Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro on Oct. 8, 1985, in a then-unprecedented act of terror.
Klinghoffer and wife Marilyn were celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary with the Mediterranean cruise when hijackers from the Palestine Liberation Front seized the vessel.
The terrorists forced it to sail for Tartus, Syria, and demanded the release of 50 Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
When they were refused docking in Tartus, the hijackers targeted the weakened Klinghoffer because he was Jewish. He was shot in the head before terrorists ordered crew members — a barber and a waiter — to throw Klinghoffer's body and wheelchair overboard.
When it became clear that Israel wouldn't negotiate, the hijackers gave up the ship in exchange for safe passage aboard an EgyptAir 737.
President Ronald Reagan, outraged by Klinghoffer's murder, sent US fighter jets to intercept the fleeing terrorists and they were forced to land at a NATO base in Sicily.
Six Palestinians were convicted of terrorism in an Italian court. The triggerman in Klinghoffer's slaying was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
