Benjamin Netanyahu's impassioned speech to Congress on the threat of a nuclear Iran annoyed Democrats — and now an abrupt tactic by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has them fuming.
While the Israeli prime minister was still in the Capitol on Tuesday, McConnell acted to fast-track a bill that would force the White House to get Senate approval of any Iran deal negotiated by the administration.
His move infuriated Democrats — including those who favor stronger sanctions against Iran — and didn't get support from Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, a leading Republican proponent of new sanctions.
"The only way to stop the Iranian terror regime from getting nuclear weapons is to get a decisive bipartisan vote on Iran sanctions legislation," Kirk said Wednesday.
He said he feared McConnell's unilateral action would jeopardize support from those lawmakers skeptical about the US-led negotiations with Iran.
"It's now time for Congress to renew bipartisan efforts and to make sure our children never have to witness an Iran-initiated nuclear war in the Middle East," Kirk said.
