This week’s couple: Too nice is too bad

Polite conversation is a sensible approach to a first-time encounter with a stranger — but sometimes it doesn't do us any favors.

This was the case for Effie-Ann, 26, who met with Tahir, 27, at Lincoln Square Steak in Midtown. Though Tahir wasn't Effie-Ann's type, she was engaged and chose to play it cordial the whole night…much to Tahir's displeasure.

She said

Tahir wasn't someone I would be drawn to right away, but I thought he was handsome, well-dressed and had a confidence about him. He eased my nerves as we began to talk.

Tahir was a gentleman. He was kind, attentive and genuinely wanted to know more about me — as I did about him. We talked about traveling, films, our career aspirations and cooking.

Lincoln Square Steak was a really nice restaurant. The service was impeccable and the waitstaff was very accommodating. I am a big dessert person and Tahir is not, but he was nice enough to split a seven-layer chocolate cake with me — and made sure they removed the blueberries, as he knew I was allergic.

The date lasted about 3 1/2 hours, then he asked for my number and hailed me a cab. If he calls, I am not opposed to seeing Tahir again.

He said

When I sat down at the table with Effie-Ann, I noticed she kind of looked like my mom. I love that lady to death, but I don't want to date her. I could tell that the conversation was not going to extend beyond that table.

Effie-Ann proved easy to talk to. She's a nice girl, but too nice. She doesn't seem to have a lot of edge — she listens to gospel music.

Lincoln Square Steakhouse was fantastic. I thought it was a lovely place, and the food and service was wonderful. We were treated like the Obamas!

I didn't like how agreeable Effie-Ann was. I generally go for people who have a bit more backbone, and who I feel are capable of telling me to shut up or that I'm acting like a douche. I did get her number, but I don't think I'm using it.
