Media pals reminisce about David Carr‘s ‘terrible’ poker game

One group of media heavyweights had a whole different reason to regret the passing of David Carr.

They had lost a poker playing buddy — and one who they fondly remembered was a lot better at story telling than he was with a poker hand.

"There will be an empty seat at the table," said Gil Schwartz, the chief of communications for CBS and one of the regular poker buddies of Carr's at the funeral.

Ish Entertainment President Michael Hirschorn, another poker game regular, called for the gang to convene a memorial poker game next month.

"He was a terrible poker player," recalled HarperCollins Executive Editor David Hirshey, as he exited the funeral. "He'd routinely lose $200 in the first half hour and then live tweet the game for the rest of the night."

The regulars, who sometimes met irregularly, included Smithsonian Editor-in-Chief Michael Caruso, Slate CEO Jacob Weisberg, and Inc. Editor-in-Chief Jim Ledbetter.
