Gay ex-employee hits Breitling USA with discrimination suit

A gay salesman for high-end watchmaker Breitling USA claims he was fired because the new boss didn't think he fit the definition of a "man's man."

Frederick Cargian slapped the watchmaker with a discrimination lawsuit in Manhattan federal court Tuesday, alleging that company President Thierry Prissert treated him and female employees like second-class citizens because they didn't meet the macho standards represented by company brand ambassador and soccer star David Beckham.

"Prissert would regularly engage in sports talk with the male reps in the office, but never included plaintiff or the female rep," the suit says. "Because plaintiff is gay, he was treated with the same disdain as were the female staff members."

Cargian says Prissert later handed off his duties to another employee who "fulfilled the ideal man's man that Mr. Prissert prized: Not only was he married, but he had been a star lacrosse player while at college, and his father, Dick Schafrath, was a star football player at Ohio State University and a former NFL player."

Cargian also claims he was finally fired without cause at the end of 2013. He is seeking unspecified money damages because of discrimination over his sexual preference.

Prissert allegedly prevented Cargian and female staffers from attending exclusive gatherings at his home and from traveling to marketing events in England and Switzerland.

Straight male employees, however, were more than welcome, the suit claims.

Prior to Prissert's arrival at Breitling, Cargian had 20 years in at the company, earning $230,000 annually and tallying higher sales figures than any sales reps.

But Prissert in January 2013 handed off much of the Cargian's Northeast sales territory — which stretched from Maine south to Richmond, Va. — to Isaac Schafrath, who had no sales experience.

The suit alleges Prissert eventually promoted the 33-year-old, who was a top college athlete — and whose father once played for the Cleveland Browns.

Cargian, 54, claims that after he was fired the rest of his territory was handed to a female salesperson. His lawyer, Janice Goodman, declined to comment.

Glenn Grindlinger, a lawyer for the watchmaker, said Breitling "doesn't comment on pending litigation" but insisted the company "takes equal-employment opportunity laws very seriously and intends to vigorously defend against the claims."
