Citi Bike’s most popular routes

Citi Bike's most popular route is short and sweet — from Grand Central Terminal to Times Square — and loved by suburban commuters who hop two wheels to avoid the subway.

Rather than use the crowded cross-town train shuttle or a bus to get to their final destination, more Citi Bike riders pedaled from the East 43rd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue dock to the one at 41st Street and Eighth Avenue and vice versa than anywhere else last year, according to NYC Bike Share and DOT figures obtained by The Post from the first year of the program.

"I've noticed that with all the new bike lanes being installed, it's just plain faster to get around,'' said Bill Decker, a 52-year-old New Jersey chef at Club 101 on Park Avenue.

He said he used to wait for a subway to head across town when he would come into the city at the Port Authority Bus Terminal — but now likes to bike to his restaurant near Grand Central.

"It's fun, good exercise and breaks up the monotony of sitting on a bus or trains for hours on end," Decker said.

Mike Keenan, a 42-year-old commuter from Orange County, said he also frequently bikes between Grand Central and the Port Authority.

Keenan takes a bus into the depot, then bikes over to his job near Grand Central.

"It's all about the speed. It definitely beats waiting for a cab or getting stuffed into a subway train," said Keenan, who said his best time is 4 minutes between the two transportation hubs.

"As long as it's daylight and at least 40 degrees out, you'll find me on these bikes."

NYC Bike Share spokeswoman Dani Simons said Citi Bike users like to mix up different modes of transportation in one journey.

"For some, it's just a matter of convenience for covering the last mile between a transit hub and their office," she said. "For others, it's trying to save a few bucks or build exercise time into their day."

Other popular journeys include the scenic jaunt from West Thames Street in Battery Park to the World Financial Center's Ferry Terminal, which passes the Pumphouse Park and North Cove Yacht Harbor.

The third most popular city ride is a 4-minute spin from Grand Army Plaza and Central Park South near The Plaza hotel to Broadway and West 60th Street in Columbus Circle.

Across the river, Brooklynites' favorite overall Citi Bike trip is from Pier 6 in the Brooklyn Bridge Park to Old Fulton Street's East River Ferry.

And the most popular way to pedal over the East River is to take the Brooklyn Bridge from Centre and Chambers streets to DUMBO's Tillary Street.

During the work week, Brooklyn cyclists' top trip is from Willoughby Street near the Dekalb Avenue subway stop to Adelphia Street and Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene.

Manhattanites like to use Citi Bike most on weekdays for ferry and bike commutes.

The most traveled Citi Bike trip for the Monday-Friday crowd is from the dock near the NY Waterway Ferry's 12th Avenue terminal in Hell's Kitchen to Battery Park City.

More than 15 million trips had been taken on Citi Bike by the end of 2014, the DOT said.
