Urban Meyer ‘doesn’t expect’ Braxton Miller to leave Ohio State

NEW ORLEANS — Braxton Miller isn't going anywhere — according to Urban Meyer.

There have been whispers that the injured Ohio State quarterback, who suffered a torn labrum in his right, throwing shoulder during fall practice and missed the entire season, may look to use his final year of eligibility elsewhere — there was a report on Wednesday Miller had contacted Florida State expressing interest in the program — but the Ohio State coach said on Wednesday he's confident Miller will be back.

"I don't expect that," Meyer said. "There's a lot of things that go on out there that is out of his control as well. So, we've had conversations and I expect him to be back at Ohio State."

A Palm Beach Post report, citing a source close to Florida State, reported Miller has expressed interest in the Seminoles. There also have been rumors about Ole Miss, Oregon and Duke.

While Miller, the two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, previously said he plans to return and Meyer said in September he would regain his starting job, that was before redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett tore up the conference.

Barrett finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, completing 64.7 percent of his passes for 2,834 yards with 45 total touchdowns (34 passing, 11 rushing), just 10 interceptions and 938 rushing yards before fracturing his right ankle in a Nov. 29 win over Michigan. Sophomore Cardale Jones, the third-string quarterback at the season's outset, led Ohio State to a 59-0 thrashing of Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game and will start Thursday night's Sugar Bowl.

Miller, who completed his undergraduate degree earlier this month, would be eligible immediately as a graduate transfer. Miller and Barrett are with the team in New Orleans, but both are unavailable to the media, per team policy regarding inactive players.

Don't look for Jones to be nervous Thursday night, said his high school coach Ted Ginn Sr., the father of Cardinals wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. He believes Jones will be up to the task as he makes only his second career start, against Alabama, in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

"Patience and poise and confidence," Ginn said, describing his former pupil. "He's going to be prepared because he don't like embarrassment. He has this little thing inside of him that you would never be able to recognize on his face. He's competitive inside. He has a mean spirit about that. You'll never see it on his face because he's always smiling."

Alabama leading rusher T.J. Yeldon (hamstring) likely will be a game-time decision, coach Nick Saban said. Yeldon, a junior, led Alabama with 932 rushing yards. He split time in the backfield with sophomore Derrick Henry, who ran for 895 yards.

"He's been able to practice each and every day that we've been here and he's looked better and better each day," Saban said Wednesday at the final coaches press conference before the Sugar Bowl. "We're very hopeful."
