This week’s couple: Silent night

Awkward silences are usually a good indicator that one person should change the subject, but sometimes that can be just as uncomfortable. This was the case when Chris, 30, and Vickie, 27, met for dinner at Café Serai in the Rubin Museum of Art.

The plan was for them to enjoy a meal before going on a special tour of the museum, but, unfortunately, dinner was enough time to determine that there was little more to discuss.

He said

I arrived before Vickie, so I had a chance to take in the space. Café Serai was dark, lounge-y, not a bad place for a first date. When Vickie walked in, she was cute, but seemed soft-spoken.

We got our drinks and split some tapas. Both the service and the food were good.

As the evening wore on, I found Vickie was as quiet as she first seemed I resorted to cliché conversation topics: where we grew up, what we do for a living, where we went to school — the basics.

There were glimpses of her getting passionate about something, but I wasn't able to get her to sustain them. She mentioned she had been talking all day because of her job — she's a speech therapist — so maybe that's why she was reticent. Still, I didn't make her laugh once — I guess I was a really boring date.

She said

My first thought when I saw Chris was that he's not my type. I'm into tall guys, and Chris is about my height.

I wasn't attracted to him, but I enjoy learning about people, so I still wanted to get to know Chris. He seemed smart and we had a couple things in common. He is one of the few people I have met who lives in a neighborhood close to where I live in Brooklyn.

The date venue itself was really nice. I liked the atmosphere of Café Serai, inside the Rubin Museum of Art, and the service was abosolutely phenomenal.

We finished dinner and did not continue the date. Chris was nice, but reserved. We were both trying to think of topics to talk about. I thought maybe we could be friends, but we did not exchange numbers.
