City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito lavished praise Wednesday on a Puerto Rican nationalist who spent 11 years in prison for a 1954 shooting in Congress that left five US legislators wounded.
The death of 107-year-old Isabel Rosado, a member of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party and supporter of the island's independence movement, prompted a stream of condolences on Twitter — including from Mark-Viverito.
"Our icon and national patriot," the council speaker tweeted.
The infamous shooting was carried out by members of the Nationalist Party. Rosado didn't take part in the gunplay, but was arrested days later as an accomplice when authorities raided the party's offices.
