A Long Island man proved he's dog's best friend when he saved his pooch from a frozen lake.
Edward Kaercher's 3-year-old golden retriever, Miller, wound up splashing helplessly in frigid Croon Lake in Massapequa Saturday after he chased some ducks onto thin ice and fell through.
Kaercher knew he had to do something quickly.
"You can't stand there and watch your dog die,'' Kaercher told The Post.

But before he reached Miller, the ice broke, and both plummeted into the freezing water.
"I was struggling because I knew if I didn't get out, this was it. I wondered if that was how it was going to end," Kaercher said, adding he quickly lost feeling in his extremities in the 35-degree water.
After several minutes, Kaercher managed to lift his dog out of the water and onto solid ice. But the ice kept breaking under him as he tried to get himself to safety and climb out of the lake.
"I was so active trying to fight and get up on the ice," he said.
Miller wasn't much help, as the confused pup kept trying to jump back in the water with him.
Finally, Kaercher was able to get one of his legs out and crawled back to safety.
Some passers-by saw Kaercher's rescue attempt and called 911. First responders rushed him to the hospital, while a witness took the dog home and watched him until Kaercher was released.
Kaercher, pictured above with Miller on Sunday, is now worried about the tips of his fingers, which he still can't feel.
"I'm a guitarist, so I hope it's not permanent," he said.
