A man is dead and several others were injured in a five-alarm blaze that ripped through a Brooklyn building, the FDNY said.
The flames broke out around 3:30 a.m. above the Flatbush Hardware store on Flatbush and St. Mark's avenues in Prospect Heights, officials said.
A total of eight people were rushed to area hospitals and one man was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Of those injured, one person was in critical condition and rushed to Kings County Hospital, the FDNY said.
Two people suffered serious burns and were taken to New York Methodist Hospital for treatment, authorities said.
Four others suffered injuries believed to be non-life threatening and they were treated at the Brooklyn Hospital Center, officials said.
By 7 a.m. firefighters were still on scene and had not yet place the fire under control. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, the FDNY said.
