Worst start in Knicks history not getting Derek Fisher down

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Derek Fisher knows he has an ignominious piece to add to a resume that includes five championship rings. He has guided the Knicks to their worst start in franchise history — a historic skid that continued with their 103-102 heartbreaker against the Hornets that dropped them to 4-17.

The Knicks rookie coach didn't realize that until he arrived in his hotel room at 3:30 a.m. Friday and the television was on in his room. There crawled the bad news on the bottom of the screen: The Knicks' loss to Cleveland on Thursday night put them at 4-16 — the worst start after 20 games for any Knicks team dating to their inaugural 1946-47 season.

No Knicks team has lost 60 games, but Fisher's team is well on pace a quarter of the way through the season. Ironically, team president Phil Jackson's first choice, Steve Kerr, has the Warriors off to their best start ever at 16-2.

Fisher said there is still three-quarters of the season left and hopes the poor start will be a footnote.

"I was not aware [after Thursday's game],'' Fisher said. "Once we got here last night about 3 a.m. and my television was already on. It ran across the bottom. It is what it is," Fisher said. "Our record is on my record. But I'm still optimistic about there being better days ahead. And that's what has to drive us right now. Not to accept where we are but just to continue to work through it and knowing we can get better if we keep working.''

Kemba Walker on his game-winning left-handed layup: "I just saw an open lane and I knew I didn't have much time.''

Walker had another highlight play earlier, swatting Jose Calderon's shot emphatically.

Fisher changed his starting lineup again, putting Samuel Dalembert back in as center after pulling the plug on him Thursday. Dalembert and Amar'e Stoudemire made up the frontcourt tandem. So after scoring his career-high 15 points against the Cavs on Thursday, Quincy Acy returned to the bench.

Fisher's inability to come up with a stable rotation is one of the curiosities of his first season as coach.

Fisher didn't get ignored Friday in trying to call a timeout as the last two outings. Thursday, Fisher walked onto the court to make sure the officials saw him signal. Fisher said the issue came up at the national coach's meetings in Chicago over the summer.

"It was a big thing,'' Fisher said. "They prefer the coaches not walk on the court the way I had to the previous. I didn't walk on the court [against the Nets] and the timeout wasn't recognized. Coaches would like to get timeous down the stretch to get a shot or a good play drawn up.''

Wearing a white fishing hat, Hornets owner Michael Jordan squeezed in to give Fisher a handshake during his post-game press conference.

The Knicks were outrebounded 41-34.
