It's a given that NBC's "Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas," a stop-motion-animated version of the hit film and Broadway musical that airs Tuesday on NBC, will recall those earlier gems. But the special also recalls an even more heartwarming and nostalgic holiday memory.

"It has that feel of the Rankin/Bass specials of the '60s and '70s," says Mark Caballero, who co-directed the program with Seamus Walsh, referring to classics like "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

Stop-motion allows for Buddy the elf — played by Will Ferrell in the 2003 film and voiced by "The Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons here — to go into fantastical realms.

"Buddy felt like an animated character already," Caballero says. "We wanted him to do a lot of otherworldly things that the human character physically can't do. Like when Buddy travels to New York, he rides on top of a narwhal."

The special blends elements of both the film and the 2010 musical, including revamped versions of the Broadway show's songs. For Santa they cast Ed Asner, who also played the jolly bearded guy in the live-action film.

The directors saw Asner as essential to the project.

"Ed has a personality like Mark Twain — smart and observant," says Caballero. "Ed and Santa have gruff exteriors, but their hearts are gold.
