Learning the hard way

Perhaps Mayor de Blasio has learned his lesson: If he again tries to strangle charter schools, he may end up the big loser.

There's reason to hope: On Thursday, de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña finally answered months of e-mails, phone calls and letters from the Success Academy charters, promising they will get much of the new space they'd requested.

True, it took the threat of a high-profile press conference hosted by Success CEO Eva Moskowitz to get this response. Even so, we call it progress.

Success asked for the space in July. Under a law passed last spring, after de Blasio lost an earlier skirmish with Moskowitz, the city has to respond within five months. In other words, if de Blasio and Fariña don't provide space by Christmas, Success can sue the city for some of the costs of renting other space.

As of last Wednesday, the school hadn't heard boo from the city, and Moskowitz scheduled a City Hall press conference to sound the alarm that de Blasio might leave her high-performing public schools dangling.

Hours before the press conference was to start, the city finally called to assure Success it would provide much of the space by the deadline. Moskowitz stood down.

Of course, all signs suggest de Blasio would still love to throttle charters if he could, not least because the best ones put the traditional public schools to shame.

Last week, he again slighted charters: "The fate of this city will be determined by how well we do at traditional education."

So the Christmas deadline remains for the city to give Success its space. On that day the charter's students will learn whether Mayor Bill is Santa — or the Grinch.
