Jets special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey is eyeing his next job, despite there being three games left in the season.
McGaughey told FOX26 in Houston that he is interested in the open head coaching job at the University of Houston. McGaughey played defensive back for the Cougars from 1991 to 1995. He also worked as an assistant coach in 2003 and 2004 at the school, which is in his hometown.
"Obviously, I'm very interested in the job," McGaughey told the TV station. "Anytime you get a chance to come back and coach at your alma mater, and potentially be the head coach, it's a great opportunity. So I'm really excited about that opportunity if it comes about."
It is not surprising the Jets' coaches are eyeing other jobs. Head coach Rex Ryan is expected to be fired at the end of this season. The Jets are 2-11 and will miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year. It is surprising McGaughey would be quoted about another job, though.
This is McGaughey's first season with the Jets. His special teams unit has had some ups and downs. Two weeks ago against the Dolphins, the Jets had two missed field goals, a deflected punt and four penalties on special teams. He spent the previous three years as the special teams coach at LSU.
Houston is looking for a coach after firing Tony Levine.
