Former Times editor Abramson writing for NYC weeklies

Former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson, in one of her first major reported efforts since her ouster from the Gray Lady last May, has penned an investigative article on pedestrian traffic fatalities for a chain of Manhattan weeklies.

Her 3,000-word piece, "The Tragedy After," explores why New York City lags the rest of the country when it comes to prosecuting drivers who kill pedestrians.

"New Jersey, Connecticut, even Alabama treats drivers who kill pedestrians more harshly," Abramson told Media Ink.

Abramson tracks a number of high-profile cases, including the deaths of 4-year-old Ariel Russo and 9-year-old Cooper Stock, to show how courts and prosecutors often fail to bring charges after traffic accidents, even fatal ones.

"If you want to kill someone in New York City and get away with it, the weapon of choice should be a vehicle," Abramson writes. "Fewer than 7% of the drivers in fatal crashes that kill pedestrians are ticketed and only a tiny fraction, usually only those who were driving drunk, face any criminal charges."

Abramson was moved to cover the topic since she herself was run over by a delivery truck in May 2007. The accident gave her a broken pelvis, a broken left femur and other internal injuries and sent her to Bellevue Hospital Center for three weeks. The driver was never charged, although Abramson did collect an out court settlement.

"In the scheme of things, I consider myself one of the lucky ones," she said.

The piece will appear in the The West Side Spirit, Our Town, Our Town Downtown, The Westsider and The Chelsea Clinton News.

Kyle Pope, the former New York Observer editor who became editor-in-chief of Straus News-owned Manhattan weeklies a year ago, said he had lunch with Abramson shortly after Labor Day.

"She said she was working on this piece, but had not decided where it would be published," he said. "We said we'd love to have it. It's perfect for our readers, since many of them live in neighborhoods where these fatalities occurred."

It will appear online Wednesday and in the print editions that hit newsstands Thursday.

Abramson since leaving the Times has been teaching a journalism course at Harvard and last month said she was forming a startup investigative journalism venture with Court TV founder Steve Brill.
