Big-spending Dodgers flex their muscles with multiple signings

SAN DIEGO — The Dodgers went into overdrive Wednesday, making two big trades and positioning for even larger stuff.

The Dodgers remade their middle infield by obtaining shortstop Jimmy Rollins from the Phillies and second baseman Howie Kendrick from the Angels. That they got Kendrick with a guy they did not have at the beginning of the day shows what kind of day it was for Los Angeles.

They dealt second baseman Dee Gordon and pitcher Dan Haren to the Marlins for four players, one of whom was well-regarded pitching prospect Andrew Heaney, who was flipped to the Angels for Kendrick. And if that wasn't complicated enough, Haren said earlier in the offseason he only would play for the Dodgers or Angels or retire. He would be walking away from $10 million for 2015.

In the aftermath of his deal, he said, "I have been notified of the trade to Miami. My strong desire to remain in Southern California has been well-documented. I will have to evaluate my options carefully before making any decisions."

To replace Haren in the rotation, the Dodgers reached an agreement in principle on a four-year deal with free agent Brandon McCarthy. The Yankees had said they would not go four years to retain him.

Here is the thing: The Dodgers are probably not done. They were believed far down the line in dealing Matt Kemp to the Padres, and they might be positioned to get another big starter such as Cole Hamels from the Phillies.

Rollins had to waive his no-trade clause, something he would not consider for the Mets. The Yankees never were told what Philadelphia wanted for Rollins and the perception was that was because the switch-hitter would not waive his no-trade clause to succeed Derek Jeter.

Rollins fits the Dodgers ideally. He has one year left at $11 million, has proven he can play under stressful situations and remained a strong player last year with good defense to go along with 17 homers and 28 steals. In Corey Seager, the Dodgers have arguably the majors' best shortstop prospect. But Seager doesn't even turn 21 until April and — as wonderfully as he played at Double-A and in the Arizona Fall League — he might not be ready. Rollins could provide a bridge year to Seager in 2016.

Gordon led the majors in steals last season. But the new front office values on-base skills — not a strength of Gordon — and has a $28 million investment in Cuban second baseman Alexander Guerrero. It appears the Dodgers saw a chance at what they felt was Gordon's peak value. In return, they would received Heaney plus Enrique Hernandez, Austin Barnes and Chris Hatcher.

And gaining prospects and financial flexibility appears at the center of the Dodgers thinking. Both could, for example, put Los Angeles in position to do anything huge — such as get Hamels.
