A sports-memorabilia shop on East 57th Street is selling an ultra-rare 1914 Babe Ruth rookie card — believed to be one of only 10 in existence — for $695,000.
The card shows Ruth as a pitcher for a Baltimore pro team before he went on to the majors later that year.
"People love to collect, and it doesn't get better than this," said Gotta Have It Collectibles President Pete Siegel. "You can't go out there and ring a bell and get one of these things. These are for the people who have everything and can't find anything else."
The shop also has a Honus Wagner card that some have referred to as the holy grail of memorabilia — and a set of golf clubs owned by Frank Sinatra that has a link to Joltin' Joe DiMaggio.
The asking price for Wagner's Pittsburgh card is $450,000.
The Great Bambino may be the most collected baseball player when it comes to memorabilia, but it's Wagner's American Tobacco Co. card that has been the most famous for nearly a century, Siegel said.
For the relative bargain price of $19,500, the shop also is offering Sinatra's Ping golf set, which was given to the crooner by fellow Rat Packer Dean Martin.
As legend has it, the Chairman of the Board received the clubs in an effort to rekindle the friendship between him and Yankee Clipper DiMaggio, Siegel said.
Once Martin received special permission from the Augusta National Golf Club, he sent one of its cherished sets to Sinatra and another to DiMaggio. He even attached a silver medallion with an engraving from Joe D. to Frank that read, "Much Apologies," in Italian. But the gesture could not close the divide between the two.
