Nurse blasts Texas hospital over Ebola treatment

A nurse at the Texas hospital where two of her colleagues contracted Ebola says anyone who steps inside the building is at risk of catching the deadly disease.

Another person who feels the staff at Texas Health dropped the ball in the management of Ebola is Briana Aguirre — a nurse who treated friend and co-worker Nina Pham.

"I can no longer defend my hospital," Briana Aguirre — a nurse who treated friend and co-worker Nina Pham — told the Today show. "They should have known that they were not handling this well. They should have known this was getting out of hand.

"I watched them violate basic principles of nursing care," she added.

When faced with the question of what she would do if she started displaying symptoms of Ebola, a tearful Aguirre said there was no way she would ever go to Texas Health.

"Knowing what I know, I would try every everything and anything to refuse to go there to be treated," she said. "I would feel at risk by going there. If I don't actually have Ebola, I may contract it there. I would do anything to refuse to go there."

Aguirre also claims that health-care workers at the hospital never received any training on what to do if an infected person was brought into the emergency department.

"We never talked about Ebola [prior to Duncan arriving], we never had a discussion," she said. "They gave us an optional seminar to go to, just informational, not hands on, and it wasn't even suggested that we go."

"We never were told what to look for," Aguirre added.

But Varga's written statement tells a completely different story — alleging that even though the triage staff did make a mistake with their diagnosis, they had been fully prepared for dealing with an Ebola patient.

"As the Ebola epidemic in Africa worsened over the summer, Texas Health hospitals and facilities began educating our physicians, nurses and other staff on the symptoms and risk factors associated with the virus," the statement reads. "On July 28, an Infection Prevention Nurse Specialist at Texas Health received the first Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Health Advisory about Ebola Virus Disease (also known as EVD) and began sharing it with other Texas Health personnel.

"The Healthcare Advisory encouraged all healthcare providers in the US to consider EVD in the diagnosis of febrile illness – in other words, a fever — in persons who had recently traveled to affected countries."

Duncan was rushed to Texas Health by ambulance Sept. 28 — just three days after health-care workers in the emergency department sent him home despite a fever of 103 degrees and displaying numerous symptoms of the Ebola virus.

Nurse Amber Vinson treated the Liberian patient upon his return to the hospital and wound up contracting the disease herself. Just one day before being diagnosed, she took a Frontier Airlines flight from Cleveland to Dallas.

There are now six crew members — four flight attendants and two pilots — from the flight that have been placed on 21-day paid leave out of an "abundance of caution," according to NBC News.

A letter was sent to Frontier employees warning them that the CDC said Vinson "may have been symptomatic earlier than initially suspected; including the possibility of possessing symptoms while on-board the flight." Despite this, the airline says the nurse never displayed any symptoms of Ebola while flying on the plane.

The fear of people flying with symptoms of the virus has prompted enhanced screening set to begin Thursday at four more airports across the country, including Newark.

The entry screenings — which include temperature readings and travel history questionnaires — were rolled out last week at JFK airport and will now also take place at Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare and Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta.
