Grading TV’s new fall shows: the early winners and losers

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 16 Oktober 2014 | 18.18

We're only one month into the new TV season — an eternity in this dog-eat-dog environment.

Early on, it's already apparent that several new shows have energized the prime-time landscape, with hits such as "How to Get Away with Murder," "Black-ish" and "Gotham" clearly outpacing the flops ("Utopia," "Manhattan Love Story," "Mulaney").

With that in mind, here is our early-season prime-time report card, in which we've graded the new shows on a scale from A to F — based solely on their viewership (and not artistic merit).

(Note: not all new series have premiered yet — "The McCarthys" bows Oct. 30 on CBS and Katherine Heigl's "State of Affairs" premieres Nov. 17 on NBC. We will include these shows in our updated "report card" later this year.)

The 'A's

It's good news for broadcast TV that there are so many "As" this season, including three shows — Fox's "Gotham" and ABC's "How to Get Away With Murder" and "Black-ish" — already receiving full-season pick-ups.

CBS' "NCIS: New Orleans," clocked nearly 16 million viewers for its last episode — just 1 million behind the "NCIS" mothership. "The Flash" deserves high marks for giving The CW its best debut in five years (4.8 million viewers), and holding 90 percent of its audience in week two.

"Scorpion" on CBS (11.5 million viewers) and "The Mysteries of Laura" on NBC (8.8 million viewers) have also held their own, with full-season orders expected.

The 'B's

With 11.4 million viewers for its last episode, "Madam Secretary," starring Tea Leoni, has proved a solid companion for CBS' "The Good Wife," while the network's "Stalker" is scaring up 8.2 million viewers on Wednesday.

New comedy "Cristela" also had a fair premiere on ABC — 6.5 million viewers, solid for a Friday night. Kate Walsh's antics in "Bad Judge" have brought an audience of 5.2 million viewers — an improvement over NBC's chronically low-rated Thursday comedies.

And though NBC's "Marry Me" has only aired one episode, its Tuesday premiere got off to a promising start, with 7.8 million viewers checking out the Ken Marino-Casey Wilson comedy.

The 'C's

Well, some of the new series are already starting to sag like old porches.

"Gracepoint," the American adaptation of "Broadchurch," has been a huge disappointment for Fox, averaging a little over 3 million viewers.

"Red Band Society" needs more than a Band-aid with its paltry ratings, while new ABC rom-coms "Manhattan Love Story" (3.5 million veiwers) and "Selfie" (3 million viewers) can't even get past the first date. NBC's "A to Z" posted the lowest overnight 18-49 ratings for a new series premiere and seems certain to be canned.

Holding its own in a difficult Tuesday-night timeslot (10 p.m.) is ABC's "Forever," which has about 4.7 viewers. The studio, Warner Bros., is high on this show and will give it time to build a following.

The 'D's

John Mulaney thought he was pretty hot stuff — before his show, a "Seinfeld" ripoff, premiered. No one watched it.

The 'F's

The Fox reality show "Utopia" is this year's first stinker. So wretched, the show has been moved to the most funereal night of the week: Friday, where it can die a quiet death.
