Mets pursuing former Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long

SAN FRANCISCO —- The Mets' search for a hitting coach is still in its early stages, but the club has reached out to Kevin Long, according to an industry source.

Long was fired last week by the Yankees and still has a strong relationship with Curtis Granderson, making him an attractive candidate for the Mets. But the Mets could have competition for Long from the Red Sox and Diamondbacks, among others. A person with knowledge of the situation said the Mets are "one of the teams" with whom Long has spoken.

Long is particularly tight with Chip Hale, who was hired as Diamondbacks manager on Monday. Hale and Long were college teammates at the University of Arizona in the 1980s.

The Mets have a vacancy at hitting coach after reassigning Lamar Johnson within the organization earlier this month. Johnson had replaced Dave Hudgens, who was fired on May 26 with the team struggling offensively.

Bobby Abreu, who spent this season with the Mets and endeared himself to team officials by preaching the organization's patient hitting philosophy, probably isn't a serious candidate for the hitting coach job, according to a club source. The lack of interest appears to be mutual – Abreu has business opportunities he would like to pursue in his native Venezuela and the Mets prefer somebody with coaching experience.

George Greer, the hitting coach at Triple-A Las Vegas, is a possibility for the job, according to a source. There are no indications the club has reached out to Edgardo Alfonzo, who has told intermediaries he would be interested. Another former Mets player, Rico Brogna, has interest in the vacancy, according to a source, but it is unclear if the organization is considering him. Brogna spent part of the 2014 season as the Angels' player information coach.

The Mets briefly considered Tim Teufel as a candidate, but Teufel informed team officials he had no interest in the position, and remains the third base coach.

Long was fired by the Yankees last week as part of a shakeup that included first base coach Mick Kelleher.

A source confirmed that general manager Sandy Alderson has decided to shorten the dimensions at Citi Field for next season, although what the precise alterations will be are still unknown.

When the season ended, Alderson said he would likely shorten the distances in center and right-center field to make the ballpark more hospitable to Mets hitters. A

Alderson was also orchestrated the last Citi Field renovation, following the 2011 season. That overhaul consisted of shortening most of the outfield distances, notably the ominous Great Wall of Flushing in left field.
