Health-care workers union supporting GOP for state Senate

A key player in the campaign to help the Democrats win control of the state Senate is hedging its bets by also backing a handful of Republicans for re-election, The Post has learned.

United Health Care Workers East Local 1199, the powerful union aiding the Working Families Party campaign for a Democratic-run Senate, has given $6,500 to re-elect Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos, records show.

The union is also backing the re-election bids of two upstate GOP senators, with $6,500 of its funds going to Mike Nozzolio of Seneca Falls and $5,000 to Cathy Young of Olean.

Young chairs the Senate Republican Campaign Committee.

The union also recently endorsed the re-election of Brooklyn GOP Sen. Martin Golden.

"Everyone knows that Senate Republicans are go to win a clear majority in November," said Scott Reif, spokesman for Skelos, of Long Island, and the GOP, trying to make the most of 1199's largesse.

Union spokesman Kevin Finnegan defended 1199's its support for the quartet of Republicans.

"We're just keeping our relationships open," he said.

But Democratic senators and WFP sources were livid.

"They're hypocrites," said Sen. John Sampson (D-Brooklyn), who easily won his Democratic primary race despite battling federal corruption charges.

"The union's executive board said it's supporting Democrats to run the Senate. Then they support Republicans. In my book, that's a hypocrite," he said.
