WASHINGTON — Mayor de Blasio insisted Tuesday his lack of a security clearance didn't prevent him from getting intelligence on threats to New York during briefings here with top federal officials.
"When you become mayor of the city that's the No. 1 terrorist target in America, your credentials start acting immediately," de Blasio told reporters.
The Post first reported Sept. 10 that the mayor lacks a security clearance, unlike his two immediate predecessors, and that makes certain classified info off-limits.
De Blasio is now applying for that clearance.
He said he didn't feel left out in meetings with FBI Director James Comey, Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson and White House adviser Lisa Monaco on terrorist and Ebola threats.
"I have the information I need," the mayor declared.
Deputy Police Commissioner of Intelligence John Miller, who has the clearance, said the information he receives in secure briefings is not much different than what the mayor gets in unsecured briefings.
"The process to get a top-secret clearance can be very lengthy," said Miller.
After a day of closed-door meetings, de Blasio said there's no new threat to the city's infrastructure, despite last month's assertion by the Iraqi prime minister that the city's transit system faced an imminent attack from the jihadists.
