WASHINGTON — Local Democrats are second-guessing President Obama's decision to roll into Long Island Thursday for his first fund-raiser there just three weeks before Election Day.
It's generally friendly territory, but Obama's appearance still has the potential to roil local races.
The event's overall goal has been slashed from
$1 million to $500,000, said one Democratic source, who griped it was "not helpful" to local Democrats for Obama to show up now.
"It's sort of like a Columbus Day sale, several days later," said the source, describing the fund-raiser as an effort by Nassau County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs to boost his stature.
Two Democratic congressional candidates — Rep. Tim Bishop and Nassau DA Kathleen Rice — are skipping the event at the Garden City Hotel.
"If they're not going to the event because they genuinely have a conflict, so be it," Jacobs told The Post.
"But if they're staying away from an event because they think they're going to gain an electoral advantage, then I think they're foolish."
Rice spokesman Eric Phillips said "Kathleen is a busy prosecutor and what limited time she has to campaign she uses listening to local residents, not hanging out at fancy fund-raisers."
Bishop's spokesman said the candidate "will be reaching out to voters."
Obama still has no plans to visit Barack Obama Elementary school in Hempstead, despite pleas by students for him to swing by an institution that named itself in his honor in 2008.
The school is just a few minutes away from his fund-raiser.
