American flags across the country flew at half-mast last week to mark the 13th anniversary of 9/11 — except at one Con Edison plant in The Bronx, outraged union officials say.
A supervisor at Con Ed's Van Nest Service Center ordered flags flown at full-staff on Thursday. He also threatened to reprimand a worker who was implementing the company's order to fly flags at half-staff, say officials of Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers Union of America.
Union President James Slevin sent Con Ed brass a letter slamming the move as an "embarrassment."
More than 100 members of Local 1-2 qualify for the Zadroga Act, meant to help workers who became sick after working on "the pile" at Ground Zero.
"Con Ed took a lot of kudos for restoring power down there," Melia said. "But when their workers are sick and trying to remember their fallen brothers, you can't put the flag at half staff?"
