Jim Dolan, as the CEO of Cablevision, owns the Knicks, the Rangers, and Madison Square Garden — where he took the stage for the first time last night to open for The Eagles as the singer of JD and the Straight Shot.
As an aspiring blues singer, Dolan has had opportunities far beyond what his talent should allow. His manager, Irving Azoff, also manages The Eagles, and Joe Walsh is his producer. He has opened for the band over 40 times.
Despite all this experience, Dolan, coming out to an almost eerily empty MSG, got off to a shaky start vocally, and remained in that tentative space for most of the show. The dirty blues of his opener, "Palm Reader," established him as a singer with limited range, an awkward way with melodies, and a tenuous hold on key.
Only one song — "Violet's Song," from the soundtrack to "August: Osage County" — found him in strong voice.
The band, almost all studio pros (with one exception, Dolan's son Aidan), made up for Dolan's deficiencies, especially fiddler Erin Slaver. If Dolan's hiring judgment had been this solid for the Knicks, the team's fans would have had a much happier last decade.
However genuine his love for this music might be, Dolan is a CEO first, bluesman second, and his tone-deafness for the music could be glaring.
That Dolan had the nerve during "Governor's Song" to whine about how high his taxes are, as he sings to a crowd in the arena that he owns, was particularly galling.
One can imagine that if Jim Dolan weren't Jim Dolan, the only place he'd be singing would be a bar in a suburban strip mall.
