Queens state Senate race could signal return of John Liu

The race for a state Senate seat in Queens is among the most closely watched in Tuesday's primary because it could signal the political comeback of former city Comptroller John Liu.

Liu's run for mayor was upended last year when his campaign treasurer was convicted of attempted wire fraud and other charges in a federal investigation of his fund-raising practices. Undaunted, Liu has hauled in more than $700,000 in an attempt to unseat state Sen. Tony Avella.

Liu had $406,000 left as of the last campaign filing 10 days ago.

Avella raised $217,000 and had $112,000 remaining — which has made the race so close that even Gov. Cuomo is refusing to take sides.

"I endorse very few candidates," said Cuomo, who nevertheless is backing Avella's Bronx colleague and fellow member of the Independent Democratic Conference, Jeff Klein.

"I always have. I don't believe in the theory of blanket endorsements. Sometimes, a Republican endorses all Republicans, a Democrat endorses all Democrats. I take it very seriously," Cuomo added.

Queens Democrats recruited Liu, 47, to run after Avella, 62, left the Senate's Democratic conference to join the IDC, a breakaway group of Democrats that shared control with the Republicans.

Avella has since pledged to rejoin the fold after the November elections as part of a deal Cuomo engineered to win the ballot line of the Working Families Party.

Liu was a city councilman before serving as comptroller and running for mayor.
