Preparing to face voters Tuesday in an inconvenient Democratic primary, Gov. Cuomo forcefully defended his performance as New York's chief executive after rival Zephyr Teachout slammed him for being the target of a federal probe.
Teachout quickly went for the governor's political jugular Monday when asked how she responds to those who question her qualifications to challenge the heavily favored incumbent.
"I'm not under federal investigation," Teachout declared on Post columnist Fredric U. Dicker's radio show in Albany.
The leftist Fordham University professor hit Cuomo repeatedly for abruptly disbanding his anti-corruption panel earlier this year — a move that led US Attorney Preet Bharara to launch an investigation of the administration's role in the panel's deliberations.
"He made a promise to clean up Albany and instead Albany is more corrupt than ever and he himself is under federal investigation," Teachout said.
Until now, Cuomo has sought to ignore his underdog rival, treating Tuesday's primary as a nuisance as he gears up to face Republican Rob Astorino in the November general election.
Cuomo hasn't even planned the traditional victory party after the primary polls close.
And he dismissed Bharara's probe.
"I don't know what that is," he claimed at a rally at the Hotel Trades Council headquarters on West 44th Street.
The bottom line, Cuomo argued, is that state government and New Yorkers are better off care under his stewardship.
"Government in Albany was gridlock. They couldn't get anything done. They were fighting with each other," Cuomo told the crowd of 450 union supporters.
"This state is headed in the right direction. We're not going back. We've passed four budgets in a row. Democrats and Republicans are working together."
Cuomo and the state Democratic Party he controls have spent at least $10 million in the fight against
Teachout, who has spent about $750,000.
Cuomo also has an enormous organizational advantage with most of Big Labor behind him.
Polls in New York City are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
