An NYPD cop died, another is in critical condition and at least seven others were injured when a department van crashed in The Bronx early Sunday morning.
The officers, all of whom were assigned to the 47th Precinct, were heading to a UN detail when the driver lost control while rounding a turn, striking a barrier on the southbound Bruckner Expressway near Bryant Avenue in Hunts Point around 5:10 a.m., sources said.
The officers were rushed to Lincoln Hospital and St. Barnabas Hospital, officials said.
Local resident William Soto said he rushed to the scene after hearing the impact from the wreck and saw first responders feverishly working on the injured cops in the pouring rain.
"The EMS was already here working on the driver, who was bleeding from the head," said Soto, 49. They put a neck brace on him and kept working on him as they put him in the ambulance."
"His chest was going up and down but he was shaking."
The witness said it appeared one of the badly injured cops had been ejected from the van before paramedics rushed him off in an ambulance.
One officer died from his injuries, while another is listed in critical condition, sources said. The severity of the other injuries was not immediately known.
Investigators are still on scene trying to determine the cause of the accident.
