Let’s Take A Moment To Celebrate Idris Elba’s Face — We Mean, Uh, Birthday

One of the great mysteries of modern life is why isn't Idris Elba a much bigger star. Don't get us wrong — he is a very famous man. He's appeared in Marvel movies and starred in some of the most popular television shows of all time. There's even one movie where Beyoncé is married to him and she is worried that he is cheating on her. That's how cool Idris Elba is.

Idris Elba is talented, charismatic, and devastatingly handsome. So, in honor of his 42nd birthday, we want to raise a toast to his face — uh, we mean, his greatest performances.

The Wire

Idris Elba first made an impact on American audiences when he played Stringer Bell on HBO's sprawling series, The Wire. The classic series has only garnered more fans and more critical acclaim over time, and you can rediscover young Elba's breakthrough performance anytime you want on streaming.  [HBO Go] [Amazon Prime Instant Video]

Luther

Most British actors have one super successful television series to their name and Elba's show is Luther. He plays a hard-boiled and obsessive detective who gets pulled into the seductive games of a beautiful sociopath played by Ruth Wilson. [Netflix] [Amazon Prime Instant Video]

Pacific Rim

Idris Elba's big superhero moment didn't come in any of the Marvel films he co-starred in, but in Guillermo del Toro's beautifully bonkers ode to Japanese kaiju films, Pacific Rim. Elba played the stoic commander, Stacker Pentacost, and got the honor of bellowing the words, "Today we cancel the apocalypse!" [GoWatchIt] [HBO Go]

Thor: The Dark World

Believe it or not, but Elba was at the center of some nerd controversy when he was cast as the Norse God Heimdall in Thor. Some people thought that a black actor couldn't convincingly play a mythic Norse being, but by the time the sequel, Thor: The Dark World, rolled into theaters, he had totally silenced his close-minded critics. Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom

Lest you think that Idris Elba can only play fictional badasses, he can also play historical ones. Elba delivered a tour de force performance as Nelson Mandela in the recent biopic, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. The role earned him a Golden Globe nomination.  [GoWatchIt]

Finally, if you can't get enough of Elba onscreen, why not soak him up as an R&B balladeer? Elba moonlights as a London DJ and actual singer. Here is one of his music videos:
