Gov. Cuomo called in one of his biggest guns — Hillary Rodham Clinton — on Friday to shore up the candidacy of his running mate for lieutenant governor.
While the governor is heavily favored to beat Democratic rival Zephyr Teachout in Tuesday's primary, the Cuomo camp isn't so certain about the chances of teammate Kathy Hochul.
Clinton robo-calls that began Friday urged Democrats to support the Cuomo-Hochul ticket — but most of the call was devoted to praising Hochul, a former Buffalo congresswoman whose once-conservative votes may not sit well with left-leaning Democratic primary voters.
"As a New Yorker, I'd be proud to have Kathy fighting for our state. When she was in Congress, Kathy showed she knows how to find common ground but also stand her ground for what's right," said Clinton, who enjoys enormous popularity among New York Democrats.
Although they're on the same ticket, Cuomo and Hochul run separately. The governor could end up a victor in the primary with Hochul's challenger, Tim Wu, as the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in November's general election.
Baruch College public affairs professor Doug Muzzio said by calling in Clinton, Team Cuomo was demonstrating its concern about Hochul.
"Wu's got them worried ," he said.
