Last week it was announced that 31-year-old Michael Che would be leaving The Daily Show to join Colin Jost on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update. Well, last night marked Che's last appearance on The Daily Show, so Jon Stewart gave the comic a touching farewell montage. The only problem? Che has only been on the show for three months.
Che's sendoff directly referenced and lampooned the show's fond farewell to longtime anchor John Oliver earlier this year. Oliver had been on the program for seven years and even taken over Stewart's hosting duties last summer, so when he left to start his own news comedy show on HBO, there was a lot of emotion in The Daily Show studio. Stewart tried to recreate this with Che, who awkwardly pointed out that it had been a "fun summer." Stewart tried to serenade Che with Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You," but ran out of tape to pair it with.
Che might have been "hardly used" at The Daily Show, but it's hoped that he and Jost will spark a new era for Weekend Update at Saturday Night Live.
Saturday Night Live's 40th season premieres on September 27 with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande. Sarah Silverman hosts on October 4 and Bill Hader on October 11.
