Supermoons occur when the moon is full on the same day as its perigee — the point in its orbit when it's nearest to the earth. Here it is over New York City's Chrysler Building.

A supermoon hovers over the Chrysler Building on Sunday, appearing 14 percent closer and 30 percent brighter than other full moons, according to NASA.
Supermoons occur when the moon is full on the same day as its perigee — the point in its orbit when it's nearest to the earth.
"The illusion occurs when the moon is near the horizon," according to NASA. "For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects."
The first supermoon of the summer occurred on July 12. The next one arrives on Sept. 9.
The name supermoon was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle over 30 years ago but only caught on in recent years.
