Carly Fiorina aids Rob Astorino’s campaign for governor

With blasts at Gov. Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina, one of the nation's best-known and wealthiest Republican businesswomen, said yesterday she's joining Rob Astorino's campaign for governor.

Fiorina, who ran for Senate in California in 2010 and served as the top fund-raiser for the Republican National Committee, told The Post she'll head "Women for Astorino'' and be involved in fund-raising and outreach appeals to female voters.

"Unlike Gov. Christie, I don't think it's a lost cause,'' Fiorina said sarcastically, referring to the recent comment by Christie, the Republican Governors Association chairman, that Westchester County Executive Astorino's effort against Cuomo was a "lost cause.''

"What I hope to do is point out to people, and particularly women, what Rob's track record is and what he brings to the table.

"New York is now 50 out of 50 [states] in terms of its business climate, so all of Gov. Cuomo's ads notwithstanding, it is perceived to be the worst state in the nation to do business.

"When New York is 50 out of 50 with the worst job climate, that doesn't help women. If anyone is waging a 'war on women,' it's the liberal policies that have produced a lack of opportunity in Cuomo's New York,'' Fiorina continued.

She predicted Astorino would close his huge fund-raising and popularity gap with Cuomo because of the ongoing investigation by US Attorney Preet Bharara of possible interference by Cuomo and his aides in Bharara's investigation of Cuomo's handling of the Moreland Commission panel on public corruption.

Astorino spokeswoman Jessica Proud called Fiorina "a whip-smart businesswoman with a national profile'' and said, "She's going to be a real asset to the campaign."

Astorino, meanwhile, recovered a little lost ground from members of the small but wealthy group of "Republicans for Cuomo'' that's led by billionaire Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone, who is also a key Christie backer.

Former Bear Sterns Chief Economist David Malpass, who held senior posts in the Reagan and first Bush administrations and unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination for US Senate in New York in 2010, helped organize a breakfast for the pro-Cuomo group earlier this year.

But last week, Malpass told Astorino he would back him against Cuomo and help raise funds for his campaign, according to a source on the Astorino team.

Cuomo's campaign plans to spend "a substantial amount of money'' — $2 million or more — on a last-minute push on behalf of former Rep. Kathy Hochul in the primary battle for lieutenant governor, Democratic operatives say.

It's an open secret in Democratic circles that the little-known, Buffalo-based Hochul could lose the Sept. 9 primary to Columbia University law Professor Tim Wu, the running mate of "progressive'' Cuomo challenger Zephyr Teachout, because of Hochul's past support for prosecuting illegal aliens and her 100 percent rating from the NRA.

"The Cuomo people are very worried about this,'' said a source who has frequent contact with senior Cuomo aides.
