Seniors at a Queens public school are fuming about being asked to pay 60 percent more than last year for a graduation package that includes $20 for tassels on their caps.
Students at the Gateway to Health Sciences secondary school called the increase from $100 to $160 excessive.
"The cap and gown is $25 but tassels alone are $20, that doesn't make sense!" said student-body president David Aronov, 17.
PTA President Sandra Clarke- Williams said the Jamaica Estates school also hasn't explained the hikes well enough.
"Everything is being done in secret," Clarke-Williams said. "This is supposed to be a transparent process."
Gateway principal Judy Henry did not return calls. But some students defended her, saying the school set unrealistically low prices last year that created a deficit of several thousand dollars that it had to pay.
Department of Education officials said they are investigating.
Administrators said the hike includes doubling the price of caps and gowns, upping prices for graduation tickets (from $5 to $15), programs (from $5 to $25) plus the $20 surcharge for tassels.
The school tried to raise prom-ticket prices from $66 to $100 before settling on $85.
