Family of Harlem gas explosion victim seeking $10M in lawsuit

The family of one of the victims in last month's deadly East Harlem gas explosion is seeking $10 million from the city in a wrongful-death suit.

George Amadeo's relatives filed a claim with the comptroller's office that said the city did not take the proper precautions to prevent the March 12 disaster, which killed eight people and injured dozens.

The claim charges that the city failed to replace the gas line, which was more than 100 years old, and also neglected to properly inspect it or ensure that Con Edison was taking the appropriate actions to keep the residents safe.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the explosion, has found that the 127-year-old underground gas main was riddled with leaks.

Amadeo, 42, was home at the time of the blast and was later found in the rubble.

Carmen Quinones, who lost her daughter Griselde Camacho, 48, in the disaster, also filed a claim with the comptroller's office earlier this month.
