ALBANY – Gov. Cuomo holds an enormous 30-point lead over GOP challenger Rob Astorino — but that margin would be cut in half if a " more liberal" third party candidate entered the race, according to a poll released Tuesday.
The Siena College poll showed Cuomo trouncing Astorino, the Westchester County executive, 58-28 percent.
When a third candidate is added to the mix on the Working Families Party line the results shift to Cuomo 39 percent, Astorino 24 percent and the theoretical third contender 24 percent.
The much smaller third party has been threatening to withhold its line from Cuomo, who secured it in 2010, for not adhering to its "progressive" values.
But the party's strategy carries a huge risk.
To maintain its ballot line, Working Families has to collect at least 50,000 votes in November. Without Cuomo at the head of its ticket, party officials concede that becomes a "big task."
