The natives still may be restless, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, in the form of Phil Jackson.
That was the takeaway from Wednesday evening's protest before the Knicks' 92-86 win over the Pacers, when about 50 fans gathered in front of the Garden to voice their displeasure with owner James Dolan.
The Knicks made a major move on Tuesday, officially welcoming Jackson as the new president of the team. Jackson won 11 NBA championships as a coach with the Bulls and Lakers, and two more as a player with the Knicks. That didn't deter the protestors.
"The catalyst was the bad season, after we had such a successful one last [year]," Karina Guerrero, one of the protest's organizers, told The Post. "Everything started from the top. It's been years of the same mismanagement from Mr. Dolan. We've just been tired of it. We thought that it was the perfect time to come and finally say something after so long."
"It's kind of obvious how Knicks fans are upset with Dolan, or they have been in the past because of the [instability] of the franchise over the last decade," Brendan Reilly, a SUNY Albany student, told The Post.
"The fact that they hired Phil Jackson kind of took some of the thunder out of the rallying part, but people are just here to show their support, [and] that James Dolan may run the franchise, but we might not love it."
The combination of Jackson's hiring and the weather — it was raining and blustery as the protest picked up steam — held down the number of participants, but the diehards were out in full force, chanting phrases such as,
"We want to win!" "Sell the team!" and "In Phil we trust!"
Although Jackson has no NBA front-office experience, some of the protestors were pleased Dolan was able to hire one of the greatest minds in basketball.
"I was actually happy," Guerrero said. "It shows that Mr. Dolan actually decided to do a smart move, regardless if it was just to save his own behind or not. At least we got [Jackson] here, and that's the important thing."
"Phil Jackson has more rings than he can wear at one time," Reilly said. "If you're going to bring in somebody, you're going to bring in somebody like that."
Some of the protestors, however, were bracing for a letdown, expressing skepticism the hiring of Jackson would work out.
"Dolan is known for throwing big money at free agents who don't work out," Mike Vivalo, a Manhattan resident, told The Post. "Hopefully this isn't the same situation, but it very well could be.
"We'll see if [Dolan] keeps his word and lets Phil handle it his way and lets him put his mark on the team without any [interference]."
