Obama blocks out the boos

WASHINGTON — He can't hear you.

President Obama looks more tone-deaf than ever as problems with the ObamaCare Web site continue to plague the White House and batter his public-approval ratings.

Just days after apologizing for the health-insurance debacle and telling the American people, "I hear you loud and clear," Obama on Sunday plugged his ears at a college basketball game between the Maryland Terrapins and the Oregon State Beavers.

Obama's brother-in-law, Craig Robinson, coaches Oregon State.

The president was greeted by cheers and scattered boos when he arrived at Maryland's Comcast Center along with First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia, The Associated Press reported.

A photographer captured Obama putting his fingers to his ears during the game.

Back at work Monday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that even though the ObamaCare Web site is supposed to be fixed by Nov. 30, about 20 percent of users could still expect to encounter issues.

But in a sign that the administration is bracing for the worst, Carney also said the White House is open to the idea of insurance companies signing up people directly, without having to go through the health exchanges.

In a holiday push to help boost support for his health-care law, the president alerted his legions of grass-roots supporters to use the holiday season to sell the plan.

Obama told supporters during a conference call that they should use Christmas as an opportunity to sell his initiative to skeptical family members.

"As we go into this holiday season, we have to remember in the conversations that we've got around the dinner table," Obama said during the call. "We've got to make sure that everybody takes advantage of the opportunity to get affordable care for the first time."

The president's standing in opinion polls has suffered since ObamaCare's disastrous debut on Oct. 1.

His approval rating now stands at 41 percent positive versus 53 percent negative, according to the latest Gallup poll.

Two months ago, Obama was at 44 percent positive to 46 percent negative.
