WASHINGTON — Cops in the nation's capital said Monday that there a person was shot inside a military building at the Washington Navy Yard.
DC police spokesman Officer Anthony Clay told The Washington Post there is an "active shooter" on the grounds of the facility in Southeast Washington.
Clay said one person had been confirmed shot, and that person's condition was not immediately available.
The US Navy said that three shots were fired around 8:20 a.m. at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building, where about 3,000 people work, the paper reported on its Web site.
A "shelter in place" order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel, authorities said, meaning all personnel should stay put.
Naval Sea Systems Command is the largest of the Navy's five system commands and accounts for a quarter of the Navy's entire budget.
The Washington Navy Yard said on its website that it's the Navy's oldest shore establishment.
The yard is home to the chief of Naval Operations and is also headquarters for the Naval Historical Center and numerous naval commands.
