CW's 'Originals' spin-off risks damaging fan-favorite series

On April 25, the CW premiered the backdoor pilot for "The Originals," the highly anticipated spin-off from the network's flagship series, "The Vampire Diaries." The new show focuses on the original vampire family, the Mikaelsons, and is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans - a city no stranger to dark magic and things that go bump in the night. Led by powerful baddie brother Klaus, the siblings leave Mystic Falls for the Big Easy, in an attempt to regain the power they once held and continue their quest for vampire (and human) domination.

Fans of "The Vampire Diaries" have watched the supernatural high school drama move from the small world of Mystic Falls, Virginia to a global network of vampires, werewolves, witches and hybrids - which has allowed the show to maintain and grow its excitement with each weekly installment. In "The Originals," viewers were introduced to a new side of Klaus and his trouble-making siblings, as well new vampires and witches living by a very intricate set of rules, created by Klaus's former protegee Marcel.

One of the pitfalls of "The Originals" for "TVD" will be the loss of the show's favorite villain. With Klaus and his siblings in New Orleans, the vampires of Mystic Falls are left on their own, and the series without its main baddies. Klaus – the most powerful creature around - has worked with and against the Mystic Falls vampires for his own private gain for three seasons. Will the gang of Mystic Falls find a new threat to team up against or will the loss of their common enemy leave the crew fighting each other instead? Viewers were also left scratching their head over how the Originals, who had been so focused on a cure for vampirism, could walk away from it and the power holding the cure brings, just as it's within their grasp.

While the writers of TVD have proven adept at writing new twists that keep even the most ardent fans surprised (namely the deaths of key characters), removing the Originals would leave a very large hole and opens up the possibility for TVD to lose the momentum it's worked so hard to create.

While "The Originals" poses interesting opportunities for a new CW hit, it would be a true loss if the spin-off is launched at the expense of one of the most interesting and addictive shows on TV.
