Homicides in the city dropped to a historic low in 2014, even as shootings increased, police said.
The number of people slain in the city was down to 327 as of Wednesday night — the fewest since the NYPD started collecting statistics in 1963. There were 335 murders last year.
Shooting incidents, however, were up slightly — 1,162 last year compared with 1,096 in 2013, an inrease of 6 percent.
The number of people shot in 2014 was 1,380, compared with 1,287 in 2013, an increase of 7.2 percent.
The decrease in the number of killings comes as city crime has continued to drop over the course of the past two decades.
Speaking to Police Academy graduates Monday, Mayor de Blasio said the low crime stats were "an achievement for the ages."
