Polls indicate that Republicans likely will pick up the six seats they need to wrest control of the Senate.
The GOP has a strong shot at winning in seven toss-up states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, New Hampshire and North Carolina.
Republicans need success in only about half, because they are expected to easily pick up seats in Montana and West Virginia and are favored in South Dakota.
"There's no question we are facing headwinds," acknowledged Long Island Democrat Rep. Steve Israel on electoral climate.
The open seat for retiring Iowa Democrat Tom Harkin is a toss-up. Harkin's chosen successor, Rep. Bruce Braley, who has garnered support from the Clintons and Michelle Obama, is facing Jodi Ernst, a state senator and Iraq war Army veteran.
And in Colorado, one-term Sen. Mark Udall is trying to fend off energetic Republican challenger Rep. Cory Gardner.
Incumbent Democratic senators most at risk of losing are Mark Begich in Alaska, Mark Pryor in Arkansas and Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, according to the Cook Political Report. The three are in solidly GOP states.
