Jill Abramson will be the commencement speaker at Wake Forest University's graduation ceremonies Monday morning — just days after she was dumped as executive editor at The New York Times.
Wake Forest president Nathan Hatch thanked Harvard-alum Abramson ahead of Monday's speech for showing up in Winston-Salem under such difficult circumstances.
"I cannot think of a better message for the Class of 2014 than that of resilience," said Hatch.
"Jill Abramson's accomplishments speak for themselves, and I am confident she will have an inspiring and timely message for our graduates."
Abramson had backed out of a commencement address she was set to deliver Sunday at Brandeis University. She was scheduled to receive an honorary degree from the Waltham, Mass., school.
"We are disappointed that she will not be attending," Brandeis senior VP Ellen de Graffenreid told the Boston Globe last week.
"But we look forward to finding another way to honor her in the future."
The Grey Lady ousted Abramson this past Wednesday and elevated managing editor Dean Baquet to that top editorial post.
Baquet had succeeded Abramson as managing editor when she was promoted to executive editor – the first female to hold that post. Baquet takes over as the paper's first African American editor.
Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. has said the move was made due to "an issue with management in the newsroom." Abramson was allegedly upset with a disparity in compensation compared to past Times executive editors.
