While the Yankees don't seem too concerned about Didi Gregorius' sprained left wrist, there was a degree of swelling in the area.
"Didi still had a little swelling, so I don't know if he will play [Wednesday],'' Girardi said of Derek Jeter's replacement at short after Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Twins at Hammond Stadium. "I feel like he is ready to go and obviously we would like him to play before we leave. He had a little bit [of swelling] so I don't know if he will be a player or not.''
Gregorius, however, said the swelling had vanished and "everything is fine.'' Gregorius said he underwent acupuncture and other treatments Monday. Tuesday he did one-handed drills in the batting cage.
Asked if he had any doubts he would be ready for Opening Day, Gregorius said, "No, not really.''
Gregorius rolled his wrist diving for a ball Saturday.
With two spots to fill in the pen, Girardi said the decision is very close.
"That will go down to the wire,'' he said.
Chase Whitley, Chris Martin, Andrew Bailey, Esmil Rogers and Chasen Shreve are in the mix for the spots. Shreve would give the Yankees a third lefty, which is considered by some to be a luxury.
"It will come down to who we think will help the most,'' Girardi said.
Martin improved his bid with two scoreless innings Tuesday during which he fanned three.
Girardi said he needs to talk to one more pitcher before he anoints Adam Warren as the fifth starter.

"The one thing I have realized about spring training: There are guys you don't see for three or four days,'' Girardi said.
Warren recorded a dozen outs in a minor league game Tuesday.
He gave up five runs (four earned) and nine hits.
"I wasn't great out there. I came out healthy, got my pitch count up. I was happy with that. … It's tough out here to get a good rhythm going. Just make sure I'm getting ready for the season,'' Warren said.
Asked if he expected to be in the rotation, Warren said, "I'm still starting now, so I feel like I'm still be preparing to be a starter. That's what I have on my mind right now. I'm trying to go out there and work on everything and get ready for the season.''
John Ryan Murphy, who is competing with Austin Romine for the backup catcher job, was supposed to make the 2 ½-hour bus ride Tuesday, but was told Monday to catch Warren at the minor league complex in Tampa.
Romine, who is out of options, caught Masahiro Tanaka against the Twins.
"I am playing to make this team and playing for the teams out there,'' said Romine, who is batting .143 (4-for-28) in 16 games. "Making this team is my goal. It's been hard. I am eager to see what happens. I am ready to go wherever.''
Pitching prospect Domingo German will have his right elbow examined by Yankees physician Chris Ahmad and there is a possibility German will require Tommy John surgery.
German came to the Yankees with Nathan Eovaldi in the trade that sent Martin Prado and David Phelps to Miami. He appeared in one spring training game, throwing an inning.
According to GM Brian Cashman, the situation will be discussed after Ahmad evaluates the situation.
Brendan Ryan started at third base, so Girardi was asked if he needed to give Chase Headley a day off during the season, would he use the slick-fielding Ryan ahead of Alex Rodriguez.
"Right now I am leaning toward Alex,'' Girardi said.
Girardi said he expects Mark Teixeira will play Wednesday at home. Teixeira was hit by a pitch in the right knee Sunday in a minor league game. He didn't play in a minor league game Monday and was scheduled for a day of rest Tuesday before being drilled.
Girardi also said he expects Jacoby Ellsbury to participate. Ellsbury got five at-bats in a minor league game and ran well. He hasn't played since March 15 due to an oblique injury.
Tanaka will be opposed by Blue Jays right-hander Drew Hutchison on Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. Hutchison is 3-4 with a 4.58 ERA in seven starts against the Yankees, but that's better than another option available to manager John Gibbons. Mark Buehrle is 1-14 with a 6.21 ERA in 21 career starts against the Yankees.
