The report on what went wrong in the reporting of a now-discredited article in Rolling Stone on an alleged gang rape at the University of Virginia will be released on Sunday.
Jann Wenner, chairman of Wenner Media and editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone, asked the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism to investigate after key elements of the story unraveled.
The school Web site on Thursday said the report will appear on both its site and the Rolling Stone site on April 5.
Steve Coll, the J-School dean, and Academic Dean Sheila Coronel, will answer questions about the report at a press conference April 6 at noon.
After the Washington Post began punching holes in the story, RS admitted in early December that it could no longer trust key elements of the opus — told to them by the alleged victim, identified only as "Jackie."
"Jackie" claimed that she was gang-raped by seven students at a fraternity party at UVA in 2012.
The Charlottsville, Va., police, after interviewing "Jackie" early in their investigation said it began noticing "factual discrepancies" in her story. She eventually stopped cooperating with investigators.
The police kept the case open but said at the time they could find nothing to substantiate that the gang rape took place.
Among the problems: The story's author, Contributing Editor Sabrina Rubin Erdely, made no attempt to contact the perpetrator — identified as "Drew" — who had allegedly taken "Jackie" on a date to the fraternity party and allegedly looked on while seven fraternity brothers raped her.
There was also no party at the fraternity on the night of the alleged incident, the police found. Also, several of the friends who were contacted after the story was published said their version of events did not match up to the woman's story.
